Agreed. I ported my 10 year old number to GV a couple of years ago. I can now switch devices and carriers as I please, without worrying about future ports. I can also use temporary numbers to get by. GV needs to be a separate, distinct product than Hangouts.

One thing to note in regard to pricing: resell value. Your Windows laptop that cost $1000 is worth about $150 in 2 years. A Mac laptop is worth at least 60% of its original cost.
