Appointed and elected. Or at least re-elected. The ballot always lists judges whose terms are up, and the only options are Yes to keep them or No to boot them. There is nobody else to choose if you vote No, so I assume they’re all initially appointed, and then elected for successive terms.

The woman didn’t deserve to be jailed, obviously, but not showing up to testify against the person you reported isn’t going to help other DV victims either and wastes everyone else’s time. I’m sure the police, prosecutors and judges run into that problem a lot.

She totally had a right to be pissed at this woman for not complying with a court order, but Jesus, three days in jail for a DC witness’s for contempt?!? A stern talking to would be sufficient and a reminder that others were counting on her to show up.

The state Supreme Court has now also sanctioned Collins, as well as ordering her to take an anger management class and attend a domestic violence course. Collins said in court papers she’s now remorseful for her actions.
