I liked the XIII trilogy too, but none of it has to do with plot. Actually, I found the story got even more convoluted, messy and audacious with each entry. Add to that the games vicious penchant for melodrama...

Yeah, like I said to the fellow above, I need to make an exception for FFXIV... I was very wary about the story from 1.0 but then ARR sucked me in, it’s the first time I paid attention to a plot in an MMO. Read more

I won’t spoil much for you, but 60 hours in and I’m yearning for story... and lamenting missed narrative opportunities.

haha yes... I'm writing all of these on the road... and also, I noted the link I put in is satire in a comment above. Also I mentioned FFX is my one big reprieve. And yes, I love FFIX. I don't think Nojima was a part of IX though.

Again, there was a simplicity to FF VI's story that made it accessible. People love that game because of how easy it is to grasp the plot of a world without magic, a technological empire fighting a classical fantasy realm and a mad man taking all the power for himself. Read more

I think the story/mythos of XV is was actually conceived to be a part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis (the game was supposed to be for smartphones and then Nomura fought to make it the next mainline.) It should theoretically share some aspects of Fabula Nova, at least sub-textually. Now, I'm assuming since this became Read more

Yoshi P is an amazing man and he is someone who really cares about his fans while at the same time maintaining a deep commitment to the principals of the MMORGP. It broke my heart to watch him cry during the FFXIV Launch event last year. Every MMORPG ever has had launch day difficulties due to server stress, and still Read more

If you look at the picture I posted above showing Ito's core games (including IX and Tactics) my hope was to give them a receive. I don't include IX (or Tactics) in my list of narrative criticisms. FF 9 had a really solid, simplified fantasy story that worked beautifully. Tactics had a much more complex story, however Read more

I think my mention of GTA was to talk about the most recent AAA games from major studios. I really don't know if it's a fragmented marketplace (I mean I know it is, but I don't know what that has to do with quality writing, I'd be interested in your ideas on that). Read more

I've really enjoyed these. I feel FFVII had absolutely everything going for it, the gameplay was excellent, the scenarios were expertly crafted and the characters were really well made. The music was unreal, I still listen to FFVII battle routinely as a pump up song. Aesthetically it felt like a perfect successor to Read more

Yes. I was 12 then too, it was such an important year. There is something vestigial about the SNES classics in certain 90s kids. It's a special generation.
