NutureShock is an amazing book, and its first chapter deals entirely with what happens when you reinforce a child with "You're so smart." If you care enough to read it, I guarantee that it will overcome your objection and probably startle you. TLDR: Don't tell a child that they are smart. Tell them they worked hard.
