If you’re going to commit crimes, do a lot at once - if they’re all charged together you’ll most likely serve multiple sentences concurrently rather than consecutively.

I don’t know about Canada, but many places have a schedule with enhancements - so there might be terms of 2, 4, or 6 years (but remember, you get double credit for good behavior, and they put you on parole for some of that sentence - very rarely is a full sentence served) - if you have a prior conviction that meets

I see a lot more effort put into preventing domestic violence and studying it than with any other violent crime - but they’re just much more difficult crimes to prosecute - less likely to be reported, victim more likely to recant or decline to press charges, the couple keeps making up, less evidence, etc.

The criminal justice system in most places is fairly progressive with non serious first time offenders and drug addicts - but the criminal justice aspect is still only one aspect.

Seems the only truly effective rehabilitation for being violent is growing old - that does not appear to be the case here.
