It didn’t make zero sense, it made plenty of sense. At that time, both of them had sincere reasons to want the other to remain alive, so both were motivated not only to fight off the guards for their own survival, but for the other’s as well (and they both literally explained this in the movie).
I’m 41. I grew up with the movies, read the books, played the games, etc. I saw this movie and couldn’t wait to see the feedback. Color me shocked at the number of people complaining about motivations, characterizations, and so on.
