I read it more as a lament for the general state of our popular culture than any real misunderstanding about the economics of the entertainment industry.

Yeah; his presence could be used effectively in a small burst. His comedic timing in “Extras” for example is pretty good.

I read the understated somewhat matter of fact somewhat caustic performance she gives as the confidence of an accomplished airforce pilot. Nothing more. 

I would agree. The character graduated from really sucks to just kinda sucks by the end of the series. The other characters were good fun.
