As a Jalop, if I get 40A 220 in my garage/shop, I’m going to need some more tools. Large tools. Large, expensive tools.
def not. if you cant charge at home an ev really isnt for you. until apartment complexes get with the times and add charging for their renters to go with their ridiculously overpriced 1br apts then its not going to work. i talk shit to all the new complexes opening locally that call themselves luxury and ask them…
Unless you own an Ioniq 5 that can’t charge at 40 amps because it keeps overheating the charge port. 32 amps FTW.
Maybe this whole thing is just a bad idea in the first place.
I know it is childish of me to laugh at Tesla-ites experiencing the consequences of their bad choices but... I mean, it is just so much fun though.
This is just one of those things that make me go, “LOL”. Then I wonder how this is legally allowed on the road and what danger it presents to cyclists, pedestrians and other drivers if it can’t even avoid a curb.
Even with my 62mi roundtrip commute in the midwest I could pull off getting back 60mi a night. At worst maybe a 20mi deficit by the end of the week? bah plenty.
Totally agree. Seeing people at the mall at 9pm at night sitting in their car getting a free 2hr charge. That’s now worth it. Get a hybrid or just by an ICE vehicle.
The need for level 2 garage chargers is VASTLY overestimated. Unless you are commuting 50+ miles a day both ways 5 days a week, it REALLY isn’t needed, truly. I commute 15 miles 10 times a week, plus the normal amount of errands, and I have literally never visited a local charging station. Only rural ones on a few…
I agree about the ability to charge at home, but you’re off base suggesting one needs a 40A+ charger. If your round trip commute is under 50 miles you can make that up overnight (12hours) at 12Amps on a portable 120V charger (assumes 80% charging efficiency and 3.5miles/kWh on the vehicle), plugged in to a simple wall…
To translate what the power company is telling you:
You don’t need a full on 40 amp for a home charge. A dryer plug swapped around to adapt to a car charger works and will charge up most EV’s in under 4 hours in the daily range area.
That’s great. I know that would not work for my wife and I though, or for a whole lot of people I know. Not everyone lives in a major city or has a short commute. Out of the 150 or so people at my workplace, probably 3/4 of us have a commute of well over 60 miles. There isn’t a charger at work, or any public chargers…
Bingo
I feel sorry for them.
Okay, but a lot of people are driving over 60 miles a day.
Yea I’ve told a few people this. A 40amp charger is certainly a nice-to-have, but unless you’re a traveling salesman putting a few hundred miles in per day, it’s hardly needed. Average commuters in smaller evs can get-by on 120v outlets just fine, and any kind of 240v means you’ve got plenty of wiggle room.
The parking…
I work in local gov’t planning & zoning and we have a conditional requirement that new units have x % of Level 2 chargers in townhouses or multi-unit. Its really not necessary because most developers are installing them for market reasons. Now the problem is the power company is pushing back saying they’re running out…
Yes, but you DO NOT NEED [240v] 40 amps at home to own an EV. Do the math on how much you actually drive in a typical week and how much time your car spends in your garage (car port, etc) and you’ll see that you very likely are able to make do on a simple 15amp 120v outlet like any regular vacuum cleaner. If you drive…
