I’ve not read all the replies, but my tuppence is that Forsaken was seriously over-priced. I haven’t bought it yet, but surely will when the price comes down. Full-game price for a DLC, no matter how good, is never going to sit well with a large proportion of fans, even “die-hard” ones...

A good way of improving most companions is by giving them a silenced weapon... it certainly cuts down on over-aggro anyway... you still get pushed around by them, so I too, don’t tend to use them... or have them as stay-by-the-door packhorse...
