I agree with everything you said about the driver market. However, that still leaves Toro Rosso zero reason to take Rossi. It has nothing to do with him, although I think you’re highly overrating him. That’s literally just not how that team operates.

Toro Rosso would because they are a breeding ground for Red Bull and try to develop future champions. Marko is ruthless and you get 2 years to prove yourself or you’re out. I think it’s fair to say that a 24 year old who has struggled to break into F1 for years now is nowhere near their radar.

Great post, I was saying the same thing to someone above. It hasn’t come to a head yet, but if push came to shove, something would have to give with McLaren/Honda’s exclusivity deal and the FIA regulation of providing customer engines.

Ron Dennis wants exclusivity. Honda wants to supply another team. This came up last year in the whole Red Bull “We’re leaving Renault, somebody give us an engine or we’re quitting!” fiasco when Ferrari and Mercedes told them to pound sand. Honda cannot refuse to provide engines to teams other than McLaren per the FIA.…

Which might be why such a board-run operation like Mercedes might not want a nutty old timer running around the paddock “telling it like it is.” I get he’s a shareholder and “consultant”, whatever that means, but mostly I see him stirring the pot unnecessarily.
