Probably if a show they have heavily invested in hasn't broken even, the studios would be pressured into trying to recoup losses by extending it for another season, along with merchandising and syndicating it in other markets.

For most of them its all about the bottom line, they will can anything that doesn't give them "enough" revenue. But are perfectly content with letting mindless drivel fill the airwaves if it feeds the cows and generates cheese.
