You are missing the part about her wanting to see Mars terraformed into a living planet, which was thwarted and put off for another 50-100 years because of the earth/Mars conflict.

I take issue with the argument that she is not in danger. The Martian government was willing to spend her life when she was an exemplary soldier, they are not apologetic about that at all, she is known (seen) to be a possible blabbermouth, and her superior has told her even more sensitive info than she had before.
