The Tech 12s, the ones-and-twos, were legendary for their high-torque motor that would play at speed almost instantaneously. If you try mixing on an inferior turntable, you get frustrated real fast.

I think it’s more of a case of Audio Technica copying the classic Technics look. Lots of other brands have similar looking turntables.
