Not saying this is true, but to me if anything it's shortsighted, not racist.

I'm not the kind of guy that goes "This is racist" at every turn, and I'm black living in the south. Mississippi at that. I would've never thought about it if everyone wasn't all "REALLY? A WHITE guy helping ETHNIC natives? Das Racist!". It really seems like looking for something to get mad about.
