In Europe they started selling them as Vito (they're made in the spanish city of Vitoria) and V-Class: one was the working van and the other was the passenger version. With time, though, that distinction became fuzzier, and for the second generation the V-Class changed name to Viano.

Nowadays it is just a difference…

FYI, the simpler van is the Vito (work truck spec, 9 seats, and 6 seats and cargo). The 'comfortable' one is the Viano, which comes with independent AC unit for the rear, 2 + 2 + 3 seat configuration and optional leather.
