You’ll waste time and energy heating the water for no benefit, though. Unless you’re one of the lucky ones whose tap runs hot as soon as you turn it on, but still a waste of energy. Mine usually takes a while. By the time it’s running hot water I could’ve had a full ice cube tray in the freezer.

Not this again... you’re wasting your time. There is evidence of the Mpemba effect but the conditions and exact cause are debated. Under most circumstances your ice cubes will freeze in about the same amount of time.

There are so many variables at play for the Mpemba effect to happen (difference in temperature between the hot and cold water, impurities, temperature of the cooling apparatus, container size, shape, and material) and the speed-to-freeze difference is small enough that you’re probably no better off using hot water
