The reason is that that is a good approximation of the intended pronunciation to most, if not all, English speakers (a group that I'm increasingly coming to believe that you are not part of).

This is English. Nobody cares how something "should" be pronounced based on spelling. For, at the bare minimum, a huge swath of the native English-speaking population, those are pronounced identically.
