You should be able to get sponsors as you progress, from the various businesses you visit. One of the best design choices they made was having the champ be covered in logos, which fits the soccer aesthetic really well.

God, I wish that the first time you spoke with the uniform shophand they were specific in telling you that you can’t wear these uniforms during challenges, only outside of Gym challenges. Would have saved me an entire day of rolling my eyes and complaining.

I’m not opposed to some online games that handle it better than competitive multiplayer or online Survival games. Most MMOs have better restrictions on when/where PVP can occur, but I personally don’t have the time to devote to an MMO.

Gen 3 actually gave both the PC and the Rival fathers. The Player Character’s father is Norman, the 5th Gym Leader. The Rival (which is the opposite gender of the character you picked) is the child of Birch, that region’s Pokémon Professor.

I was excited to order this for my younger brother, hoping to pick a couple up so he could be creative in a different way (he’s technical like me so hoping to expand his mind artistically, if he so chooses). Even at $20 a pop that would be acceptable, since it’s an homage. But that price is a bridge too far.
