But with the doctrine of dual sovereignty, the federal government and individual states are treated as distinct from one another, each with the authority to launch an investigation/prosecution. Not entirely. You’re largely safe from prosecution, but additional charges could be brought against you if they can be shown to be true without encroaching on the elements of the crime original charged.

Interesting, my only experience has been with the word being applied to what might be considered “po’ white trash” - carnies (literally) and those a little rough around the edges who sometimes go door-to-door. Might be a regional thing, I grew up in a very white area.

You’re right; my mistake. The person who taped TRAITOR to his former favorite player’s jersey and is protesting the fact that the player agreed to a contract somewhere else by holding up a sign outside the team’s headquarters is acting in a perfectly reasonable way.
