Seems to me the obvious thing to do would have been to play the games on Jan. 2... I don’t know that I have seen any reasonable explanation why they didn’t. There are no NFL games to go up against.

It’s not a Division I football championship. It’s just a set of bowl games that some sponsors decided constitute a “championship.”

It’s the adult demographic that’s the most impressionable and subject to inducement, and willing to pile on more debt to acquire whatever crap is being peddled. Older folks may have more money, but they’re set in their ways.
