I was combing through the games yesterday and amount of survival craft em ups and metroidvanias is nauseating.

I am a writer, with the upshot that I get bored and irritated with games that give me a gaping black hole of a protagonist and expect that to be fulfilling somehow because I can pRoJecT mYseLf oNTo hIM! Oh, honey, no. If I have to do all the work of making the story worthwhile, I will write my own. 

That’s not at all the concept of an RPG, no.

No, it is you playing a role in that world. In fact if anything the point of an RPG could be argued to be not being yourself.

What it immediately made me think of were the sections of Mass Effect 1 with the Mako. Giant open areas which were basically just pretty terrain meshes, with periodic bespoke pieces scattered around, hinting at mysteries and making the whole setting feel like it had some age to it.
