Nobody is suggesting time traveling racists. Racists make racist jokes and gestures like hanging nooses, drawing swastikas, or waving Confederate flags all the time just to be general dickheads. They don’t necessarily have a specific target in mind every time.

The slip noose knot has been used to hang people for a lot longer than that. It’s used because under load (i.e. when you drop someone from the platform) the loop tightens and more often results in breaking the neck at the bottom of the drop, which was considered more “humane”.
