I agree with you on the technology of the Lytro. I was blown away by the first images published after its release. The Pi was more of a "That's cool, what can I do with it?" reaction.

I could argue the same thing about the Lytro. You called it "more novel than practical" and sited its potential, that makes it important to me, the potential. The Pi meets those criteria in spades.

I agree with most of the items on the list. (Is a TV really a gadget?) Where does the Raspberry Pi fit into this discussion? The goal of getting kids interested in the nuts and bolts of computing on the cheap is laudable. They sell out rapidly. And people are doing some really cool things with them. Thoughts?

Walking into the kitchen and discovery this, the last thing you want to do is make the child panic. Quietly take the picture. Move the chair. (It's more dangerous if the kid falls on the chair then the floor, and reinforces the lesson they are about to learn!) Then ask them to explain what they are trying to do.
