that’s exactly what I do. In fact, I keep the original cardboard box that the fan comes in and cut 2 large square openings - one on the intake side and one on the exhaust side, then tape the filter on the intake side.  This way there’s a much better seal.

The motor in an air cleaner is subject to restricted flow as well so what people are doing is comparing free-flowing fan motor lifespans to restrictive flow of air filtration systems, and that’s not apples to apples.
