The record player I had when I was a kid had 4 speeds and this was easy to do. The Chipmunks had a human friend, Dave, and when I played a 45 at 33.3 rpm’s, you could hear Dave’s voice slowly talking of line of dialogue. It was revelatory to me as an 8-year old and kind of creepy.

Use a big pot of water and check it occasionally to see that there’s still an inch or so of water above the can (lay the can on its side.) If you need to add more water, you can do so at anytime. If there is a lot of hot water, it won’t cool off too much when topping it off.
