Actually, I think you got the ending wrong. His dad couldn’t escape from the plane. That’s why at first he sees Jack coming out of the explosion. He imagined his dad surviving. It’s all a sick fantasy (which is why the explosion continues in slow motion in the background). I found that endingparticularly depressing.
