Also, they’re both sequels to the original FLCL, but not really connected to each other.

The LA Times story that followed the announcement has a fair few sources suggesting there’s more to it:

The Spider-Man issues without the CCA were from 1968 — the Very Special Issue nature of it was a big part of why they got away with it. Morbius’ introduction was in 1971, soon after a slight liberalisation of the Comics Code that made restrained use of horror elements permissible where they wouldn’t have been before.

Edwin Drood was also published by monthly installments, so its unfinished nature actually shows Dickens had committed to a publication schedule he intended to write to, rather than only publishing when the book was done.

As far as I know, all Peter S. Beagle’s novels are standalone or distantly connected at most, though, which is different to Martin or Rothfuss’ unfinished series.

The main character of God-Emperor definitely needs wiggle room for himself.

Unlike Cowboy Bebop, One Piece as an anime/manga is almost wall-to-wall ‘things that are difficult to pull off in live action’.

There’s also a tendency for the narrative to centre round Baldwin because he’s the preexisting public figure in all this.

Morbius in particular, I’d say — he was a character who was created so Spider-Man could fight a vampire, rather than being a compelling character in his own right. Some of the other options have more going for them in the source material, but, yes, they’re still supporting players.

I AM BENDER, PLEASE INSERT ACTOR.

a.k.a. Anna Sorokin

In which case, I’d recommend the work of Jan Svankmajer, where that is 100% the intended effect.

I guess we just found out the answer to “Ready or Not”

I think Hitchhiker’s is beginning to run into issues with how it’s aging — there’s a fair bit about its comedy that’s inspired by Britain and its relation to the world in the late 70s/early 80s — and it’s hard to reinvent it. (And harder now, without the original author.)

Since more than one person can watch a Netflix account, 221 million subscriptions would mean something over 3% of the world population able to watch Netflix (depending on how many people actually do use each account).

That seems less likely to me — there are already named guest stars for it, and the trailer doesn’t suggest that close a link to the episode he was in (besides both being Dalek ones).

So how did the Earth get to be without form and void?

You might be thinking of one of the faked pieces that was going round, which inserted a paragraph about Baldwin joking “Why don’t I shoot the both of you?” in the middle of an otherwise real Variety piece.

On top of that, I thought her death seemed overdetermined — that she dies because that’s the thing Gwen Stacey does, not because it was a good way for the story to go.

I tend to think it’s that superhero costumes are generally meant to be special-purpose outfits, and adaptations usually add texture and detail to the design. Anime outfits are often meant to be (from the character’s perspective) regular clothes, and live-action adaptations rarely seem to know what to do with stylised
