well, gotta say i love my 2012 xterra. its a manual, its quick, and it was 5k less than an equivalent 4runner. Its simple inside, but its a pleasant kind of simple.

I also struggled at first, but knowing when/how to lock on and use the auto - velocity matching helped me out A TON. really took a lot of the stress out of it.
