Amongst folks I know, quite common.

People who don’t have large families don’t use enough dishes to fill it before they run out of dishes/things they need to use again. My parents haven’t run their dishwasher in 15 years.

You only get paid if you get hired to do the job, though. And many artists (whether experienced or just fresh out of college/highschool) tend to create portfolios filled with works they have done even if they haven’t been used in any projects or created from their free time.
