I think at this point if people have watched four seasons of GoT and their chief complaint is the pace, I really don't know why they bother. This has been a feature, and not a detriment at all as far as I'm concerned, since the very beginning.

Varys is *not* taking the ship, or at least I don't think that was the point of that scene. When he hears the bells toll, he realizes what has happened and turns around to cover Tyrion. As you can see, his presence deters anyone from searching the crate.
