Yes, I absolutely agree. And I love playing hardcore on my Witch Doctor. The threat of losing it all is thrilling, though that in itself doesn't make the game challenging per se .
You're kind of missing my point, it's not that death should be permanent, I'm just saying it's the be all and end all of many video games. There has to be some different carrot to dangle over a player's head other than the threat of death and/or losing all of your progress because of... wait for it... death.
I think it's a problem that lies with players frankly. Everyone wants to feel powerful right off the bat.

Even though I personally agree with this sentiment, from Blizz perspective that would be alienating to their playerbase (who are also paying customers). It sucks that they cannot really go whole hog on the difficulty because of profits.
