Hi there! We decided to make ED-209 as a costume because that seemed like it’d be more fun overall. Yes, he was a lot of work and we could have made him in the computer, but then we wouldn’t have an awesome 6-foot tall souvenir. =)

We loved this scene and met those guys at the screening, and now we hang out and collaborate. =)
Bastards.
I wanted a breakaway chair that felt like it belonged in a cowboy saloon fight. Seemed funnier to me. Here’s the final scene:
Great minds think alike! Have you seen our final scene?
We love the original masterpiece by Phil Tippett! It was animated in front of rear-screen projected footage, so it was in-camera with no compositing necessary! Very smart and effective.
We always struggled with what to call him. Replica? Full-size puppet? Costume says a lot and conjures a mental image in a shorter word. =)
I actually fell while wearing the costume for a photo opportunity. Photos: https://goo.gl/Ng4q1i
We were tempted to remove the legs in post, but it was a fun experiment for us to let go of CGI perfection for a change. You can also see Daniel Kent’s face through ED-209's mouth.
