The timing for my last post is unfortunate. After the Outback started misfiring the other day, the verdict came back from the garage - head gasket gone, with a repair estimate of $4400. I think we’re done, although I thought we’d have a few more years :-(

My daily is an ‘02 outback 5MT with ~170k. Slow as shit, rusty is spots and getting to the age where things are starting to go and every repair job includes at least one “is it worth growing more money at this?” moment, but l love this car, so I persist in keeping it on the road. I know a replacement is inevitable one…

This seems like another case of someone buying a formerly expensive car cheap, without appreciating that, regardless of the purchase price, expensive cars mean expensive car maintenance*.
