Some other offerings that many faculties offer include networking workshops or mentorships. I volunteer for these and it amazes me that participation rates aren't 100%.

The time to start looking for a job is at least the year before you graduate, more if you're in certain fields.
If you're doing this you should be sure that the people you're looking at work in the department you're interviewing with. Many times IT people will be dressed very casually but the sales group will be all suit and tie. In very large companies the culture/dress code will be different in different divisions and…
While you can get the content for free there is value in having to take the tests, write the papers and get graded. I listen to university level history classes during my commuting, sure I've got the content but I don't consider myself as knowing the course like I would need to if I had to pass the class when I was…
The thing I'd stress is that people today will likely have a career that spans many different jobs. I'm an accountant and went to school to be one. That sounds pretty linear but along the way was a degree in engineering, stint at leading a small IT shop, corporate spy, forecaster then various accounting roles. With…
It's probably a good idea to get some change when you get some foreign cash or at least get some at the airport. I got caught once because I didn't realize the drive from airport to hotel was on a toll road. That could have been costly but the nice toll booth lady cautioned me and sent me on my way. Then I had to get…
I'd also suggest that before you start on a project consider when (time of day) you'll be able to work on it. If you get caught needing more screws or you need a plumbing bit will a store be available and open? I have a rule that I'll never start any plumbing project after 2 pm on a Saturday so that if I run into…
A rotary tool is one of those things I thought was a frill and yet I dig it out all the time.
I start getting antsy at the 3.5 year mark, that's usually when I've done 3 or 4 annual cycles in the current role and it's about time to look for the next opportunity. The other side is that I'm reasonably senior and experienced so I expect it will take longer to find the right fit.
For work we can't use Evernote (data loss prevention) so I transitioned to OneNote. If the handwriting recognition is reasonably good it would become a very great app.
look at getting a japanese style saw. They are much easier to use than traditional handsaws and being unpowered you aren't likely to lose a thumb. I bought mine at Lee Valley but there are other places.
you'd be surprised how much weight a properly constructed wood joint can hold if designed properly.
My long term projects include making some storage benches with a back. We're trying to build furniture that you'd see in the 'Not so big house', dual purpose items that use basic and renewable materials.
a Kreg pocket hole jig (they make a ton of other kinds of jigs btw) is probably the best investment I've made in tools. And it only cost around $40. Now that I have one I use it constantly and I don't have to design things so that I'm covering up screw heads or limit myself to using ugly brackets for shelves.
I do something similar as an accountant - I have a blog where I post some of the process work that I do or some basic macros / ideas. Stuff that shows that I'm able to do the technical/hard skills and more importantly have good communication skills (the separator between management and analyst). It also gives people…
Great timing I need to upload a picture to LinkedIn. I'm just trying to get a business selfie that is professional but not too professional making me look like a real estate agent.
I find that when i shop online I don't buy as much as I can see the cost of the cart before checking out. The downside is that online is more expensive.
i used to do this trick but bought a mutual fund - most places will let you buy $25-$50 per transaction. The money was set aside, I couldn't easily spend it but I could access it in within 3 days.
the app support is why I have avoided Android tablets so far. If I was to suggest a tabletI would say iPad mini or surface RT then android. The only exception would be the Nexus 7.
