Question for the racers: Is there ever a case where drifting is NOT a slower way to get around a corner?

I drove my little autoX car on a kart track on a cool fall day, when the track was damp. It was just like driving on ice. The kart guys explained the kart tires leave a greasy residue that interacts poorly with street tires. Very unpleasant.
