Everyone doing self driving research says you can do it today. The problem is you need an $80,000 lidar on the top of your vehicle. So not really affordable.

You need an EV that can get most people through a week of work. 300 miles isn’t enough. 600 might be. Imagine how expensive a 600 mile range EV would be today.

So, let’s say you owned a horse in 1920. If you lived in a city you had to pay to keep your horse somewhere, have it fed and taken care of. If you lived in the country everytime you road into town you had to take feed, find water for it, make sure nobody stole it.

On the other hand, when word of mouth starts happening about workers that got written up or fired because they came in late due to forgetting to plug in the car overnight, co-workers won’t be so keen on getting the work endangering EVs.
