The “xDrive” AWD system—which debuted with the then-new 2003 E83 X3—always used clutch packs; it was never a viscous coupling system. However, previous BMW AWD systems did use viscous coupling.

Rear wheel drive based AWD systems like BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Infinity are limited to a 50/50 torque slip between front and rear, whereas the Subaru symmetrical AWD and Quattro systems can shift up to 80-90% to either axle and additionally shift 100% of that to a single wheel.

The key is to watch all of the various OEM-sponsored AWD comparisons:

Boring?! Why, there were very exciting shots of the holes being drilled and spikes being installed in the tires. There were breathtaking shots of the driver zipping up his jacket. And don’t forget the nerve wracking, hellishly scary scene of the stationary motorcycle being photographed!
