Right? I turn 40 tomorrow (!!!) and I’m far less cantankerous about celebrities than I used to be. I’ve also found that despite the stereotypes of growing older, heading towards middle-age has made me more appreciative towards pop music, because most of the pretentions I had about musical exclusivity have kind of

The fact that those necklaces aren’t already being sold in every Hot Topic* in America shows how much they dropped the ball on marketing.

Holtzmann’s wardrobe was friggin’ INCREDIBLE! Between her amazing steampunky outfits, her alien weirdness and her technical genius, Holtzmann feels like the female Doctor that Steven Moffet would never give us (and would screw up if he tried).

‘Steampunk Annie Hall' is the most glorious and accurate descriptor ever.

Thanks. And keep fighting the good fight in Austin! I know how much of an uphill battle it can be.

That is an excellent, excellent point that I never thought of.

I am actually a little grateful that Mickeysfsfsf is contributing to this thread, because his attitude and arguments are actually very common amongst the new tech transplants in the area, and I think he gives a first-hand demonstration of why there is such a backlash against the new tech industry. It’s a very social

“What’s your plan to treat people with mental illness some of who don’t want treatment?”

Whoops, sorry; I didn’t realize until looking upthread that your comment thread conversation was about Austin, not San Francisco. It sounds as though Austin’s predicament is very very similar to SF’s, but obviously some of my points may not necessarily apply (for instance, your city’s probably physically bigger than

“The city is trying to fix this but it is not happening fast enough for many people who were already here.”

My old work was right there. I worked at a supportive housing facility for dual diagnosis homeless. Working with disabled people who had absolutely nothing in the shadow of that glimmering tech monolith was incredibly depressing.

And let’s play devil’s advocate and say that, yes, they are buying groceries and going to restaurants, etc. They’ve still raised the income inequality so much that the person serving them their coffee has to work two other jobs in order to afford rent. It’s often necessary to take these other jobs, even if you have

Lots of places either sit empty, or got rented to startups.

Plus, good luck if they’re over 30. They’ve done studies on the hiring habits of the tech sector, and aside from hiring folks from out of town with the right ‘connections’, those people also are nearly unanimously white, male twenty-somethings, even when people in other demographics apply who are equally qualified.

Right? One of the main reasons the tech companies came here is because the city let them get away with not paying the same tax rates that any other company would have to pay. They’re crying foul because heaven FORBID they not be given privileges above other people!

Nobody here can afford property, so no, it’s not helping our ‘property values.’

“targeting our technology sector and making them out to be villains, simply because they’re trying to create jobs and [build] our local economy, is just a backwards approach.”

I know you meant this as a joke, but there legitimately is a Speedy Gonzalez movie in production ::sigh::

I was dissappointed when I went to Hot Topic the other day to find no Ghostbusters merch at all. It was SWARMING with Suicide Squad stuff (of course), but didn’t even have a t-shirt for the new Ghostbusters.

At the very least, they should at least have alternate figures with the ‘civilian’ versions of their outfits, because the costume designer on that film was on point, especially with all of McKinnon’s cosplayable clothes.
