Note to Mattel: if you sell replicas of Holtzmann’s steampunk glasses you will make all the money in the world.

When I see IL, I usually think ‘John Hughes movies!’ which... actually... still sometimes makes the state look pretty racist now that I think about it :/

Have you heard about the novelization? It will justify all of your squickiness on E.T. The book goes into E.T.s inner monologue, which is (no joke) almost exclusively about wanting to bang Elliot’s mom. When I first heard about it, I was certain it was hyperbole, but I found the book at a thrift store and it’s so so

Does the 80's tone extend to practical special effects? I loved ‘Super 8', but got pulled straight out of the mood once the Cloverfield-esque CGI monstrosity flailed onto the screen. Also:

Me, too :(

I mean, this would be pretty crappy no matter what, but it seems particularly vile to me now because this should be her moment of goddamn triumph. She just made a major-film debut in a film that’s actually well-recieved despite all the naysayers and she’s fantastic in it! This should be her moment in the spotlight to

I feel like it took a big nosedive after Charlie Jane left. The comments used to be pretty respectful, but it seems like a horde of jackasses were waiting at the gate the moment she left :(

I made that mistake earlier because it was cross-posted here, and my belief in humanity took a direct and severe hit :(

I love that your issues with the promotional material is prop inconsistencies. No, really - I legitimately love that. You’re my kind of geek and are invited to sit with me at my table and share my Oreos.

“i don’t know if i’ve ever seen a movie in which every female character was actually written to be stupid, incompetent or a jerk”

It’s gotten really good again, and the reason I think it’s gotten good again is actually because of McKinnon and Jones.

I’ve actually been referring to it as ‘Bechdel Ghostbusters’ (in an ‘intending to be flattering’ way).

In one of the article threads about Ghostbusters, somebody forwarded me a video that kind of discusses why it was such an enduring movie, and why it specifically affected kids (despite in no way intending to be a kid’s movie). The (very good) analysis that the video writer concluded was that what Ghostbusters taught

Yeah, I had an ex co-worker who burned a bunch of them to a CDR for me (wow... I guess it really HAS been ten years) and my initial feelings on the early episodes was ‘Yay! This is fun and has half the cast of ‘Roseanne!’ But it got pretty tedious after a while.

Is she? I hadn’t heard that. That’s really disappointing.

Oh... good. I was steeling myself to be flamed. I’m pretty relieved; thank you for being fair and measured in response.

I can see “People really like her, but she does nothing for *me*” but can’t fathom “that woman’s objectively not funny at all, why would they let her ruin Ghostbusters?” which is the prevalent sentiment I see a lot in comment threads. In another branch of this thread, I had a similar interaction with somebody about

I haven’t seen Spy yet, but it keeps coming up as being highly recommended in the Jez comment threads.

I mean, I guess? Her humor is pretty based in being wide-eyed and unhinged (even her baseline ‘normal’ demeanor is a liiittle off) so I couldn’t really argue that her humor’s particularly subtle. I guess I can see intellectually why that wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

It’s a common complaint I’ve seen from the people moaning about Bechdel Ghostbusters; “I’m not sexist - it’s just that Wiig and McCarthy have never been funny in ANYTHING!”
