Well, to be fair, Lord and Miller stated that each LEGO film will be different in tone and style so that they will not feel like the orignal film done again. With that being said maybe Waksberg can bring his own style into this world to make it unique. Heck, the plot alone for the sequel sounds pretty depressing to be

I'm hoping this film is more in the vein of The Peanuts Movie or the upcoming animated Smurfs movie.

Why? It already looks like Sony is learning their lesson by making a fully animated Smurfs film that is true to the source materiel. If they apply that same care to Popeye chances are it could be something great like The Peanuts Movie.

Actually, I think that is still happening. Last time I checked in 2013 Universal got animation veteran Bill Kopp, who promised the movie would not be modernized, to direct it and the film is planned to be as they stated "3 stories woven together into a feature length cartoon".

Actually, the CGI test footage for Genndy Tartakovsky's take on Popeye (which was going to be an origin story) was nowhere near weird. If anything it felt like the original cartoons and It was sort of like The Peanuts Movie in terms of style. As a matter of fact here is a link to the test footage https://www.youtube.co
