You never understood because it doesn’t make sense. Historically, the Bond part almost always went to relatively unknown actors, not actors that somehow had to make a flashy campaign or be A-listers. The gossip mags simply latched on to the Bond nonsense, because name dropping Bond will bring extra clicks/ readers.
