This sounds similar to my wife’s experiences while we lived and traveled in the US south. If I was with her and our son, we would get better service. In restaurants, stores, everywhere. If I wasn’t, they would get ignored or get poor service. And lots of stares. There were also a few occasions when we had to leave…

I had a number of similar experiences with my mum, rest her soul, a white woman. One time we were at a pub in England, in the town she and I were both born in, I was having a pint and we were just sitting by ourselves, minding our own business. I went to the bathroom, came back and she wanted to leave immediately.
