I’m not aware of re-gen braking, but there is a central power unit; a stationary diesel with an electric generator. That generator powers the electric motors, (and huge planetary gear reduction) inside of each enormous wheel. It’s a remarkable unit, and I drove past it almost everyday on my way to work.

I’m working on a Meyers Manx SR (dune buggy) that I plan on making an EV. Since it is likely to be used very infrequently, being an EV has some significant benefits for me. No winterizing to deal with, and generally less issues caused by having it sit unused for potentially extended periods.
