Did you read the NYT article in full, or just these small pieces from it? You might find it takes on a different tone if you read it all. This just makes me think of that scene in Erin Brockovich when the redhead from CSI says, "If you have no breasts, no ovaries, and no uterus, are you still a woman?" and Julie Roberts says, "A much happier woman" or something to that effect.
