Yea its not "How do you future proof your data" its more of "are you continuously updating you old data to work with the new tech?" Winrar (I know hate me) but 7-zip sometimes for the ones Winrar doesn't support (I have had problems with spanning rar's in 7-zip ie. .rar001 .rar002 etc.)

@BrianW62: Well actually you can run rockbox "ontop" of ipod os letting boot into if need be and letting itunes continue to sync content
