If I remember correctly, Starling becomes completely brainwashed at the end of the novel Hannibal. In that book Hannibal and Clarice are running around killing people as a couple at the end. It makes sense that the seeds of that are in Silence of the Lambs.
The best bit is when Sherlock acknowledges that DCI Luther is also a genius. Luther has this look like “Isn’t it obvious?” and Sherlock seems to measure the man for the first time having dismissed him as a know-nothing copper.
