My guess, Arnold designs the "maze" as a test for bots who are breaking loops and/or achieving sentience. The end of the maze is the church, and a confessional elevator where the bots go to meet their maker (Arnold) and see the control area. Bots who complete the maze all go crazy/catatonic but Arnold persists.…
