I am both deeply confused and offended that the A:V Club has writers who don't grasp the concepts of lines and characters in a scene.

Reading through the lyrics again, they're not actually that bad.
Turning the phrase "put your hands where I can see 'em" from a command by an intimidating and abusive authority figure into a bandleader asking the audience to wave their hands in the air like they just don't care is at least kinda clever and joyful.

3 Drugs at night are bad, drugs during other times are probably fine.
4 Fuck."

Here are the full lyrics . They're not that great, but I don't really see the problem, or why you would be confused about the meaning. Or why you would be offended unless you're an abusive cop.

The song is not supporting police violence. And it doesn't mention race.
