Sold that ages ago, wanted to go with something older. The E39 kept breaking every time I did things with it, and was a decent amount of work to keep in good condition over the 45k miles I owned it. The E34 touring has been a lot more robust and seems to take my abuse a lot better.

You’d be surprised, BMW’s of that generation (E34) are quite reliable. They were way overbuilt. I’ve owned several and it has not taken much money to make them very solid cars.

BMW or not, I can always appreciate a good wagon! I like those old Mercedes wagons, there’s just something so nice and old money about em. I saw a mint condition one not too long ago, it was gold with a tan interior and had sheepskin seat covers, and it just reeked of low-key millionaire.

Heck yeah! I love that yours is a proper LHD E30 touring, seems like most people import RHD tourings from the UK— living with a RHD BMW in the US is silly, especially because it’s not like a JDM car where it’s the only option.

tl;dr: wagons are the best.

tl;dr: buy a Cayman, more specifically a 987 S or 981 S. Nicer interior, better build quality, more storage space, and manual transmission.

I mean, you can do 16mph over in the Phoenix area without too many issues... highway speed limits are 65 but everyone does 80, and street speed limits are 45 so everyone does 55-60. It’s nice.

Even before I moved to Arizona I used my AC compressor year round, because I hate humidity. Heat + AC is wonderful, it keeps the car from getting too stuffy or muggy.

The seller equates it to “75% of an M5, for a fraction of the price tag & upkeep.”

Yeah, BMW hasn’t quite figured out 4 cylinder engines quite like VW has. Heck, even the Mercedes 4 cylinders are smoother, and that’s not a brand that’s particularly known for their 4 bangers either.

Modern 4 cylinder engines tend to do that... having a turbo, relatively high compression, and direct injection to try and squeeze every last horsepower out of a miserable little 2L 4-banger means it’s not gonna be very smooth, so the mounts are usually crazy over-engineered liquid-filled units to try and make it

As I’ve gotten older and gotten more experience with wrenching, I’ve learned a valuable lesson: skill as a mechanic does not necessarily equate to doing things perfectly every time; in reality it’s all about how quickly you can recover from the mistakes that inevitably happen. These days I have a full arsenal of bolt

Great, so now it’ll be trickier to find a GT4 manual in 30-40 years when I can maybe afford one with 200k miles.

I’m not surprised at all, but then again I’ve spent a lot of time in Europe riding in Mercedes buses and seeing Mercedes trucks everywhere.

Chrysler makes a big deal of the fact that this system can not only run entirely in front or rear-wheel drive mode

Fair enough. But for me the problems go beyond the grilles... I’m not a fan of all the infotainment screens— for a while you could spec the car to not have one, but they’re standard now. Don’t like the electric power steering either, nor the extra weight of all the cars. Fake exhaust notes are a bummer too.

Good to hear they’re making an inline 6, I just hope they don’t put it sideways... remember when Volvo did that? Ick.

As a BMW enthusiast, I want to be upset, but realistically I haven’t cared about anything that BMW has made past like 2003... I’ll just stick to these grilles:

The 6-speed is cool, but I’d be wary of that N62 V8... they’re known for having issues with the coolant crossover pipes (which are very expensive to replace) and consume oil + smoke due to bad valve stem seals. Pretty much all N62's develop valve stem seal issues sooner or later, and it’s an incredibly expensive job

Because my cars a) have nothing valuable inside them, b) have the blue book value of a melted Slurpee, and c) are usually a manual transmission. Good luck!
