Wrong.
Wrong.
Wait until AVC discovers Ethiopian Jews.
God help Denis Villeneuve as he gears up to somehow develop a good screenplay out of Dune: Messiah which was easily, by far, the weakest of the original Dune books.
A white woman and a white man manipulating desert zealots into being their army for power and revenge is exactly the fucking POINT of Dune, and no it is not portrayed as a “good thing”. The casting is deliberate because of this. Most of the freeman are BROWN. Chani literally asks in the first movie “who will our new…
Unless the next week drop off is exceptionally bad, it’s almost certainly going to make $550-600 million at the box office and then be a strong performer on streaming and the back-end*. That easily makes it worth it for the next film, especially if Villevenue can keep it in budget (first Dune movie made less than…
WB is desperate for a franchise so unless this movie completely craters next week I think Messiah is in the bag. Great reviews, strong opening weekend. It’s really all WB could ask for right now
If you are ever in Washington, you can read the saying on the IRS building itself — “Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society”. As for companies blocking the IRS from making filing taxes easy/automatic (the way they are in nearly every other country), yes, H&R Block does play a role, but far more so the problem…
I liked these. I was born before 1990 so I have that ability.
> However, there is a jarring disconnect between the words uttered by the film’s characters, many in Arabic or derivations of the Arabic language, and the actors uttering those words. With the exception of Souheila Yacoub and Zendaya, all of the main characters are played by actors of white European descent. No one is…
My take is Herbert used that as shorthand for desert culture, not that Arrakis is populated by the descendants of Arabic/Middle Eastern Earthlings.
“Visually ravishing storytelling...but it’s a B.”
With the exception of Souheila Yacoub and Zendaya, all of the main characters are played by actors of white European descent...
Other way around for me.
Denis Villeneuve films often look stunning but are boring as hell. His Blade Runner sequel is a perfect example. I loved every second of Dune and have probably seen it five or six times already.
Sadly Pugh fares worst out of this quartet since her part is small and the character ends up being just a forgettable plot convenience.
Dune is a story that takes place 10,000 years in the future. Commenting on the presumed improper ancestry of the actors playing the main characters is more than a little silly.
“However there is a jarring disconnect between the words uttered by the film’s characters, many in Arabic or derivations of the Arabic language, and the actors uttering those words.”
This whole review, sentence fragments and all, reads like hastily scrawled first impressions.
If this is a “B,” then what would an “A” review look like?
“when the story is clearly borrowing from myths and folklore from a particular part of the world, perhaps the casting could have been more diverse.”
“Most audience members were surprised by the ending, which set up a continuation of the story.”
